 Sand is seemingly a combination of liquid and land. You sink but can never drown, and with every step you take, the earth engulfs
your feet and makes it a chore for both muscle and willpower to traverse its ever-present grip.
Now throw a two-foot layer of sand on a mountain, and, depending on how you see it, you have an incredible workout challenge or a device for self-torture!
The sand dunes in Manhattan Beach are about the hardest 400 meters you will ever travel. The sand is deep and the grade is steep! The combination of the two will give you a workout you won’t soon forget. However, what really makes the dunes such an awesome place are the people. The dunes regularly compel flocks of folks to tackle the challenge. It’s a great place to form a kinship with others on your level of fitness as you make the trek up and down the dune together. There are some words of advice to heed, however. Don’t wear shoes when you run the dune because they will slice into the sand faster and make each step sink deeper. Secondly, don’t go to the dunes when it is hot outside because the sand will heat up and burn your feet. Sand also acts as a reflective surface and bounces the hot sun back onto you, making the heat much more intense. The dunes really are an amazing challenge, which unify all who have the courage to attack them. The workout is great, the people are amazing, and because of its city park status, admission is free! |
